LS Black Constructors, a St. Paul based design-build firm, is expanding and, as a result, is currently seeking a project manager to join its Civil Division. The project manager is responsible for managing all project aspects. Duties include leading interdisciplinary teams to deliver construction projects from start to finish. This includes actively participating in the design and execution of project safety and quality control activities; being responsible for project staffing and budgetary controls; assisting in bid package development, pre-qualification activities, and budget preparation; lead preconstruction meetings and coordinate answers to RFIs; lead efforts to analyze risk and define schedule related issues; analyze and present project delivery approaches, develop alternative approaches, and facilitate implementation; oversee project close-out and claim resolution; lead team through schedule development and management; and actively lead and ensure operational success.

A successful candidate will have a degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering or equal experience working for a construction firm with applicable field experience, strong computer skills, good communication skills and a willingness to learn. The project manager responsibilities include:

  • Project planning, scheduling, and coordination
  • Safety and quality control management
  • Accurate forecasting and management of budgets
  • Change order management
  • Manage critical subcontractors
  • Manage project engineers and subordinate project managers
  • Resolution of problems involving labor disputes, material delivery, and contract administration
  • Maintain vehicle, equipment, and tool management


  • Minimum of 10 years of construction management experience in heavy civil construction
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining project schedules
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) to direct, organize, and communicate with team members at all levels
  • Proficient in estimating, scheduling, budgeting cost, field supervision, financial reporting, and client relationships
  • Proficient in construction management software
  • Ability to interface with a variety of technical and business personnel with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy
  • Strong negotiation and risk management skills
  • Talent acquisition and management
  • Alternative delivery construction management (DB, CM/GC, CMAR, PPP, etc) a plus
  • Critical thinking and decision making skills
